Choosing wood for the furnace

  • December 17, 2024

The firebox with wood, this can not only be a need, but also the owner’s own desire, who understands that this will give the home a particularly warm and unique atmosphere. However, not all owners know what firewood is best useful for the furnace to give maximum heat. Therefore, in this article we will consider which firewood is best acquired according to certain characteristics.

Important characteristics of wood

First of all, it is worth highlighting several important characteristics of wood:

Density;

Moisture content;

Storage.

If you choose wood for constant heating, then you should give the choice in favor of the highest coefficient of heat transfer, which is affected by the density. Such firmness may differ oak, beech and birch. Due to the fact that the oak, of course, is more priority, but it is more difficult to find it, then a good option will be a birch, according to the density. Middle -free ones include coniferous trees, as well as a pear and apple tree. Such varieties will be less heat, but it will flare up much faster. Soft varieties of trees as aspen or alder are more often used in decorative fireplaces, which are aimed more at creating comfort and decor.

The moisture content in any wood should not exceed 20%, because otherwise it will smoke and poorly flare up with minimal heat transfer. Check it is easy enough, just take two wood and hit each other. If the sound is loud, then the logs are well dried.

Storage is a very important point, because the moisture of firewood depends on it. If they are stored in the open air, then you should not expect anything good from them. It is important to put them in a stack and hide from getting wet.

In this regard, we can conclude that the most valuable firewood from oak, which is burning for a long time, maximum heat transfer, but they are quite expensive.

The birch is perfect for the furnace, because it not only quickly flares up, good heat transfer, but an unsurpassed aroma is transmitted through the air. And the price of chopped birch firewood is quite acceptable, unlike oak

The trees of conifers give less heat transfer, but grief, distinguish a beautiful tonic aroma.

Aspen – burns very quickly, so the heat transfer is minimal, but it practically does not create soot.

Alder – heat transfer more than the previous option. Does not create soot, but when combined with a birch, the flame becomes more attractive, and it is almost impossible to tear it away from it.
