A mixed martial arts tournament in Sydney has been cancelled due to police concerns that former UFC fighter Suman Mokhtarian could be the target of an assassination attempt by members of a local gang, 2GB reports.
Mokhtarian was due to coach at the Dark Matter Fighting Championship tournament at Warwick Farm in Sydney’s southwest on April 19. But New South Wales police intervened, leading to the event being cancelled.
In February 2024, Mokhtarian was the target of an assassination attempt outside the Australian Top Team gym in suburban Sydney. Then, a gunman, allegedly disguised as a courier, opened fire on Suman, after which he was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Mokhtarian’s last fight was against Sung Woo Choi in December 2019 at UFC Fight Night 165. In that fight, which lasted the entire distance, Suman lost by unanimous decision. He has eight wins and two losses.
