Known as “The Tank,” a 24,000-square-foot former naval bunker has been transformed into exhibition space as part of an ambitious redevelopment of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Dubbed the Sydney Modern Project, the $230 million project has been described by officials as “the city’s most significant cultural development” since the iconic Opera House opened nearly 50 years ago, according to CNN.
The gallery’s original 19th-century structure now sits at the heart of the art museum’s campus. The massive new building, which opened to the public on December 3, doubles the museum’s exhibition space. Three new art pavilions wrap around the hillside, cascading down to the harbour.
